Why You Need To Make The Healthy Choice The Easy Choice

As key as individual choices are when it comes to health, no one person behaves in a vacuum.

The physical and social environment in which we find ourselves plays a *huge* role in the choices that we make each day.

Think of your environment as the invisible hand that shapes your behaviour.

So when it comes to weight loss success, you need to consider not only your internal environment, which relates to your habits and mindset but also your external environment, which is the various physical environments you find yourself in.

You can know exactly what to eat and have a positive, prepared mindset to match, but if the environments you spend most of your time in don’t align with the choices you are trying to make, it’s going to be a hell of a lot harder to keep moving forward.

As the famous saying goes - ‘change your environment, not yourself’

By ensuring the environments you find yourself in on a regular basis, such as your home, workplace and those you socialise with are positive and conducive to the type of lifestyle you are trying to build you make the healthy choice the easy choice, streamlining your life as well as set yourself up for better weight loss success.

Use the following checklist to identify areas to supercharge your environment:

  • Have healthy snacks on your desk to reach for instead of the traditional lunchroom biscuits and cakes (beware of snack thieves!)

  • Organise your fridge and pantry so you can clearly see what you’ve got on hand to prepare and cook a healthy meal

  • Lay out your gym kit before you go to bed at night to make getting to the gym that bit easier

  • Charge your phone on the other side of the room when you are going to sleep so you're not disturbed by notifications or tempted by a late-night scroll

  • Mix up your social plans so you don’t always find yourself defaulting to the pub

  • Cut down your alcohol consumption during the week so you aren't letting mid-week drinks throw you off your weight loss goals

The purpose of this checklist is NOT to say you can’t ever have another drink or pub meal again but to

instead, shine a light on the day-to-day areas of your life that you might not even realise are preventing you from achieving your weight loss goals.

Change doesn't have to be scary. Making small, targeted tweaks to your environment can have a huge impact on your behaviour and help move you closer towards the person you want to be.
